Until the 19th century the town, founded on an island, whose name roughly means ‘next to the bridge’, was only connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. It was also protected by fortified towers which were built in the 17th century as defence from the Turks. Nowadays, photos of Primosten are often used to advertise the area to tourists.
