Lipsi
Developments on Lipsi are paving the way for the future of the island ...
The spacious harbour in Lipsi is situated in a well-protected bay in the main town, named after the island itself. There is space to moor on both sides of the harbour’s concrete jetty. Lipsi used to supply the nearby island of Patmos with produce farmed by local monks. The roots of this industry are once again visible today: the island has the potential to be self-sufficient and many products could be organically certified. There are many vineyards thanks to the island’s long tradition of wine production, which is celebrated in the wine festival every August. The island’s infrastructure is also more advanced than its neighbours; it even has its own wastewater treatment plant. The islands used to be seen as a place for escapism and in Lipsi this still appears to be the case, with the island slowly bucking the tourist trend. Urbanites have started to turn to the island to put their life in the big city behind them and invest in a future independent to the mainland. You will not have much luck looking for large hotels due to a construction ban for large projects. Overall, the future of Lipsi as a top class destination for sailing holidays looks hopeful.
