Gemiler Adası is living proof that in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. there was bustling tourism here. Christian pilgrims from Europe thronged towards the Holy Land and to Jerusalem and obviously their route passed by Gemiler. How else can we explain why an island which is only 400 mtrs by 1000 mtrs has four Christian churches on it, even though there is no water. At the end of the 90s a Japanese team of researchers tried to find an answer to that and excavated here. One theory is that St. Nicholas (of Myra or of Sion) lived here, making it an attractive place of pilgrimage. For sailors, mooring at Gemiler proves that you can undertake exclusive trips into the mists of history by boat and only by boat, far away from buses and roundabouts. Even though quite a few excursion boats come here and there is a visitors' fee, sailors can virtually have the island to themselves in the evening. A sunrise amongst Christian ruins is not something to be missed.
