The romantic and rugged island of Kalymnos may not have many places to moor but the commercial harbour in Pothia on the south of the island has all the supplies you need. It is also the island‘s port of entry and one of the liveliest places in the Dodecanese islands. The island is also the home of the famous sponge diving trade; a museum will teach you all you need to know about the island‘s former key source of income. These days, the island is a hub for free climbers; with visitor numbers growing by the day, the industry has become a main source of income for the island and the 600m high mountains of Kalymnos have become a much-loved climbing ground. However, the high mountains mean that it can often be quite breezy in the bays during the evenings. Mooring spots are well spread around the island: in Emporios in the north, Palionisso in the west, while in the south you can drop anchor by the striking fjord in Vathy. During the summer etesian, you are recommended to travel along the western side of the island towards the north, as the neighbouring island of Telendos will provide some protection from the wind.
