The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Chora on Patmos is crowned by the Monastery of St. John. One could phrase it somewhat profanely; why, shortly after the birth of Christ, did the author - who obviously had been banned to Patmos - experience his revelation right here? Up until today all the research has been inconclusive about who the historical personality was who formulated this "Apocalypse," or Book of Revelation of St. John. The cave in which the revelation is said to have taken place can be directly viewed, today forming one of the most important sacred sites of the Greek Orthodox Church. The work in 22 chapters, whose main theme is this revelation, is the last book of the New Testament. Terms such as the "Book of Seven Seals" or the "Lamb of God" stem from it. Could it be that its contents were conditioned by the cruel, early persecution of the Christians by the Romans? How otherwise would such apocalyptic thoughts have taken root without any pre-history on the isolated and lovely island of Patmos? One thousand years later, upon the relics of an Artemis temple, today's monastery was founded by the Monk Christodulos and the reputation of the holy island of Patmos was established. The massive edifice is enthroned above Chora, like the crown of the island, diffusing a mystical aura which characterizes all of Patmos.
