Sedir and Cedreae mean cedar. The latter was the name of the ancient city, the ruins of which can be visited on the so-called Cleopatra Island. Cedars cannot be found anymore and most probably Cleopatra has never been here. The white sand does not originate from Egypt either, but is a granular sedimentary rock which was formed over long periods of time in warm calciferous water and worn away by the movement of the waves. Nevertheless, the legend seems to be neatly woven, almost too neatly as the barriers around the beach show. Too much sand has been taken away by tourists. What makes the island so charming is anchoring over white sand (entry from sunrise until sunset only) and the ruins - overgrown by olive trees - in the Eastern part of the island which appears at times to be an ancient magical garden.
