Antiquity Myra was the part of the Lycian league of towns with the subtitle “the magnificent“. Since ancient times, Lycia has been the name given to the peninsula between Fethiye and Antalya. Characteristic for Lycian culture were cliff graves, which are to be found in the surroundings of almost every bay. Myra has some of the most remarkable cliff graves, and their painted reliefs give us a profound impression of the death cult surrounding these family shrines. The Theatre of Myra is one of the best preserved and the largest in Lycia. In Roman times it was used for gladiator fights. At the dawn of Christianity, Myra became significant because of visits by preachers who were later to be canonised, such as Paul or Luke. Thus Myra assumed great significance for early Christianity and was even mentioned in the bible. Another notable figure was St. Nicolas, who was active as a bishop here. For these reasons the Church of Myra is one of the most frequented in all of Lycia.
