1922 was the year when a treaty between Greece and Turkey sealed the fate of Levissi, as it was called then. All the Greek inhabitants of this small town situated on the slopes were displaced. In their place Turks who came predominantly from the region of Thessaloniki were settled here. Being farmers, however, the Turks did not like living on the sloping terrain and set up home instead on the adjacent plain. In this way a ghost town was born, whose roots stretch back to ancient times. Today the old houses with more than 3000 ruins have been designated as historical monuments. The most interesting building is the Greek-Orthodox church. Due to the proximity to Fethiye and the tourist magnet of Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy is experiencing a new golden age and restaurants can be found nestling between the decayed houses. Initiatives were also taken to revive the friendship between the Turks and the Greeks, with meetings being held, combined with cultural activities. Starting from the Cold Water Bay a path leads up the hill and to Kayaköy at one of the highest situated spots (see picture above). From there you can enjoy an unforgettable view - especially in the early morning.
